This is for US law, but it's fairly similar in Australia. Good point to note about who can and can't confiscate your film. Note that shopping malls aren't public property.

I’ve personally been moved on from under the Sydney bridge (had my ID noted by Sydney City secuirty).
I’ve been questions after shooting in an oil refinery public car park in Kurnell (police ended up being called out and caught us on the side of the road, where they took down my ID).
I’ve also been question, at the Opera house, where they said it was OK if it wasn’t a video camera.
I do a lot of night shooting, I think the govn’t believe terrorists only come out @ night.
