Post 4305: Thanks Cameron. I didn't take the Diamox - I understand it's meant to allow better uptake of oxygen into the blood, but some doctors think that it may have unintended side effects (since it's commonly used not for treatment of altitude sickness but as an anti-coagulent).

The most taxing part I'd have to say is the altitude sickness. The fatigue and weather can be uncomfortable (and we were lucky that it didn't rain!), but you can take it slowly and rest and that will go away. But altitude sickness sticks around - there's not much you can do to prevent it and it hits people to varying degrees (if at all). Still, general fitness helps with your overall comfort levels - the less tired you are, the more you will be able to enjoy the surroundings!

Post 4305: Mate, awesome write-up. My friend Wade passed this on to me as i'm doing Kili next year. Your honest writing was what i like reading. I much prefer it over the fluff articles that don't tell you what slog it is.

We're planning on doing the 4000m Mt Kinabalu in Borneo a week or so before Kili, hopefully to help Acclimatize.

Did the Acetazolamide help you at all? you said you were told not to take it, I've been told it's good to take at night?

What was the most taxing on your body? the altitude sickness or the physical walking?

once again a great read.. wasted a good hr here at work :)

Post 4380: Stu, his explanation was, in its entirety, "because you have to account for variable change". (Or was it chance? I remember change, maybe it was chance though). Completely cryptic and irrelevant.

Seems like a silly thing to ask at an interview (although I guess it depends what position you're going for?)... Given the stats behind it, and their understanding, are taught in a 3rd year stats subject. So unless you're going for a job that needs a heavy stats background (like, I dunno, statistician), the only thing that question would show is whether you've read and remembered the Wikipedia page or not. It's a bit like asking "what year did <famous person> die" - whether you know or not says nothing about your suitability to the role.

If you're interested in this area of stats look Google for "envelope paradox" (or wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_envelopes_problem). IMHO it's a much more interesting problem than Monty Hall. BTW if you're looking for the answer/solution on the web, be discerning as there's lots of stuff written on the subject that is just plain wrong.

True - but unfortunately his _explanation_ of why switching would double his chances of winning is utter crap. That kind of ruined the moment for me (it seemed they missed a great opportunity to use one of the real answers, which would have sounded no less impressive to the layperson).

Post 4327: Hi Wade, I don't think you're missing anything - del.icio.us is a much more extensive and better solution - LinkLogr is a basic, lightweight thing. It was originally just a personal site, but I adapted it for multi-user use. I was also going to add a feature where you could download a PDF of all the unread webpages you'd logged (so you could take a printout on the ride home), but I had a bit of a problem getting that feature working... hopefully I'll figure out the problem and get it working soon.

As for my RSS feed, it just takes the first 500 characters of the post, including HTML tags and dumps them out verbatim... I really should get around to cleaning that up! (I didn't know people were actualy using it! :)

Post 4327: Hi Stu, sounds a lot like del.icio.us, which is what I currently use for the same task. Click add link, tag it with various tags and done. I use furtherreading as my primary come back to tag, but the beauty of del.icio.us comes when going back to read items. You can view furtherreading, and then drill down to the next level. Often I'll tag something furtherreading video, and when looking at what to catch up on when it's late at night, will just select the appropriate tag to re-display.

i'll investigate your app in more detail. You're pretty good with developing things that fill a need, so maybe I'm missing something.

Also, whilst talking about Web2.0, your XSLT/RSS Feed on hearye.org appears to has a few issues. It doesn't parse links or images at all, and it chops input after 500? characters. All things that make it very hard to read your blog clearly.

Peace,

Wade
